FIREPLACE AND FLOOR MEDALLION MOSAICS So far I have done one floor medallion, and here it is. Fireplace mosaics are a great way to showcase this medium as they they beautify and serve a purpose as well.They can be placed on the hearth, around the firebox and over the mantel.

A floor medallion in a home on the Chesapeake Bay. The lower image is the mosaic as it looked on my work table, before it was attached to the substrate, installed and grouted.

Title 4 Seasons of Monadnock

Mount Monadnock, New Hampshire, is a favorite long distance view for those of us living in western Massachusetts. Here it is through the seasons. The clients were thrilled with the results.

Title Shoe Mosaic - more pictures to come!

These shoes were made for walking... a shoe fireplace surround. This full view mosaic is pre-attachment to panels. The 3 images below show attached and grouted mosaic details. Note the gold in the moroccan slipper and the mirror glass of Cinderella's slipper. Refer to large image where upside down mirror and gold look entirely different. There will also be 2 side return panels of pale yellow tile. As this commission is for California, I crated up the sections and shipped all out for the client's tile installer to re-assemble.

Rockport, Ma scenery. Originally the plan was to install permanently over fireplace, then client decided intstead to have the mosaic framed.

Title Mourning Doves and Cardinals
Info This mosaic design was made to complement a Venetian tapestry that hangs over the mantelpiece. Instead of Venetian doves, I chose Mourning Doves and a pair of Cardinals; the hosta, forsythia and rhododendron are all plants found in the client's gardens.

Title Seven Warblers Mosaic

Info

 

This was done for a wildlife biologist and his family and is a framed work that hangs on the brickwork above their fireplace. These New England warblers are all indigenous to Maine. For the bird watchers out there they are, clockwise: black and white warbler, yellowthroat, blackburnian warbler, redstart, yellow warbler, magnolia warbler and black throated blue warbler.

Title Loon

Info

 

A loon is a natural motif for a mosaic with its dynamic patterning. The plant is arrowroot. I especially liked playing with the reflection and keeping the background indistinct. The purchasers will be hanging this over their fireplace. Will add a picture if I ever get one!
